The Book of Life Free Movie Watch Online, "What is it with Mexicans and death?!"

→ October 16, 2014 A charming tribute to Mexican culture and its Day of the Dead holiday, director Jorge R. Gutierrez and producer Guillermo del Toro's The Book of Life follows three childhood friends – Manolo (Diego Luna), Maria (Zoe Saldana), and Joaquin (Channing Tatum) – whose romantic fates become the subject of a wager between two married deities: La Muerte (Kate del Castillo), who oversees the Land of the Remembered, and Xibalba (Ron Perlman), ruler of the Land of the Forgotten.

If Manolo, La Muerte’s champion to win Maria’s hand, succeeds then Xibalba must stop meddling in human affairs, but if Xibalba’s choice Joaquin wins then he finally gets to rule the Land of the Remembered.

Manolo, who wants to be a singer, hails from a long line of famous bullfighters, but he’s proving to be a disappointment in that regard to his father as he refuses to slay the bull. Macho man and town protector Joaquin has his own set of daddy issues, having grown up in the shadow of his fallen military hero dad. Maria, meanwhile, is no wilting flower waiting to find a husband having been raised to know kung fu (because that’s what was apparently taught in convents in the 19th century).

The movie is bookended by a field trip to a museum by a group of detention-worthy kids where their lovely tour guide (voiced by Christina Applegate) relates the story of the movie to them while also giving them (and the audience) a lesson in Mexican traditions.

A major film release actually worth seeing in 3D, The Book of Life is one of the most visually stunning and sumptuously executed animated movies in recent memory. (The Land of the Remembered sequence alone is, no pun intended, unforgettable.) Managing to be simultaneously dark and vividly colorful, the movie’s handcrafted-looking “wooden” protagonists and its three different realms help differentiate it from the slew of other CG-animated fare out there.Where the film’s animation is distinctive and daring, its plot is formulaic and predictable. Two guys in love with the same woman is a tried and true trope, but at least its trio of characters are endearing and funny enough to help compensate. Still, the film’s plotting is the weakest element of this otherwise enthralling experience.

The movie gets points for addressing the death of loved ones – something most Hollywood kids’ fare dances around or avoids altogether – even if it still sugarcoats it. The subplot about the outlaw Chakal and his marauding gang of bandits is spaghetti western filler, but the villains’ rotting look is suitably creepy.
